[quote:00acf]Situated in a South Philadelphia immigrant neighborhood, Geno's -- which together with its chief rival, Pat's King of Steaks, forms the epicenter of an area described as "ground zero for cheesesteaks" -- has posted small signs telling customers, "This Is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING `SPEAK ENGLISH."'[/quote:00acf]
hahah, I always loved Geno's better than Pat's anyway.

This kind of thing I fully understand and agree with. I'm sick of all the asian people that come over here and just don't bother to learn english. The worst part of it is that they open up fucking shops and stores and refuse to put up any signs in english - It's like they're trying to force their culture on us.
It would be okay if it looked like they were at least attempting to fit in with the rest of us New Zealanders, like most other cultures that immigrate here do, but it really feels like the asian immigrants don't want to have shit to do with any NZers and just want to start mini-chinas everywhere.
The stores keep popping up more and more in my neighbourhood as the days go by and if you ever try to get service at any of these places they never speak a word of english and get frustrated when you don't speak mandarin/cantonese....It's so fucked....They also have the most disgusting standards in their restaurants and cafes - Fucking gross.
I hate this shit it makes me more and more prejudice when I see people all of the same culture making my way of life harder and harder.

You have two established languages, yes. French and English.
You don't have people from germany coming up to you expecting you to speak deutsch though, do you?

thats retarded, he's just limiting his own business. i dont mind other people speaking a different language, but i dont get how other people claim to know the motives behind immigrants/tourists who dont speak english. how do they know if they are refusing to learn the language or that they dont respect the host culture? you have to give first gen immigrants a break because they come here as adults and spend most of their time working and trying to make a life for their family, so its going to be harder for them to learn a second language. if this moron would understand that the 2nd generation is probably going to speak english fluently like his stupid italian retard ass did, then he wouldnt it wouldnt be such a big deal. how does he know that they havent just arrived, or if they arent tourists? its his store, so he should be able to sell to whomever he wants, but i think hes dumb for being so bigoted towards other people.

I don't know about the particular cases that guy experiences, but down here you go into these peoples stores and they're so fucking rude its unbelieveable. They try and hurry everyone who doesn't speak their language and they get pissed off at you because you're wasting their time or something. The worst part is it's fucking fish & chip shops and bakerys that they're taking over - Stores VERY popular among english-speaking NZers....Fish & Chips are like part of our culture. I can't remember the last time I went to one that wasn't owned by people that spoke broken english at best. I have absolutely no problem at all with someone who attempts to speak to me in english, but when they open up with mandarin/cantonese and look at me like I'm retarded when I reply with english I just feel as though someone is fucking with me or something. It's insane behaviour.
It's like me going to China in a heavily populated suburban area opening up a store that serves traditional chinese food and being incredibly rude to anyone who doesn't speak a word of english...Ridiculous.
My girlfriend works at a chemist and says she has had customers shouting at her because she couldn't understand the language they were speaking.
I never used to have a problem with any immigrants at all, but after you experience more than a single case of this behaviour its hard to deny your own instincts which is to just become prejudice when it comes to Chinese immigrant store owners who don't speak english.
I really hate being a bigot...I usually make such an effort with other cultures, but when this shit goes on I feel like I'm going insane.

It's not being a bigot, it's being practical. I think it's obvious that a store owner would want his customers to speak english, because if anything, it would limit their business to have people in line who can't speak english. Geno's is one of those places that generate lines down the block and every minute spent trying to communicate with someone who doesn't speak english is less money for "Geno"
