What to ask a private seller -
06-26-2006, 02:19 PM
I found a Ford Ranger from a private seller and I would appreciate it if you guys could give me some advice on what kind of questions I should ask. If it helps, it's a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT.
Engine: V6 3.0 Liter
Transmission: Automatic
Drivetrain: 2WD
Mileage: 162,087
Power Steering
AM/FM Stereo
Dual Front Air Bags
Air Conditioning
Power Windows
Power Door Locks
Single Compact Disc
ABS (4-Wheel)
Sliding Rear Window
Bed Liner
On Kelley Blue Book it's value is set at about $4,365. The one I found is priced at $4250.

why hes selling it.
162 K miles?
thats like ~260 thousand kms off the top of my head. isn't that a lot? i don't think i'd buy a car with that many miles. not only because the engine has that much wear and tear, but the body does also. probably have to watch out for rust and things like that

200K miles would be a good time to put in a new engine if you have the money, I think. I didn't really see any rust anywhere, but I could have been looking in the wrong places.
Nyck, tell me more about it plz. biggrin:
Have you had any problems with yours?

The seal around my back sliding window is rotted I think so whenever it rains really hard it leaks into my car...fucked up the interior a bit.
Other than that no problems...and I drive mine in snow. so it would prob be in better condition if its in cali.
I have no rust at all on mine

i think thats way too many miles for a 1998 car. i would look elsewhere and you should check out carfax.com or something like that. Cant you get a DMV report on it?

you can do a conditional sale pending a vehicle inspection.
tell the guy you want to get the truck checked out, take it to a shop and they'll go over it. I would do that for any vehicle whether it has 20,000 miles of 200,000 miles on it.

Rangers = roll over waiting to happen if you drive stupid in them. Good truck all around though. TO be honest though, look for a 87 to 95ish Toyota compact pickup. THEY GO FOREVER. (377km and counting on my freinds and it passsed its etest with honors)

Wow a 2wd Ford truck with 160,000 miles on it. That seems to me like a waste of $4,000. I would understand if he drastically lowered the price to make it a deal but it seems to me it would be a rip-off. Atleast go for something 4wd.
