Default -- New Server Admin Needs Assist -- - 08-28-2002, 04:54 PM

I'm in the process of setting up the 7th Rangers server and while I have experience with web design, I'm just now getting into gaming servers and need a bit of community assistance. A big THANK YOU to the guys at XGS, and to Ballbuster at DOA for their help.

1) Is there a book of server.cfg "seta" commands used specifically for MOHAA? If yes, where can I get it, and if not could someone please assist with HOW TO on the following:
a) How do I set up the map list to run both dm and obj maps at the same
time?
b) What is the "seta g_motd" command suppose to do?

2) In the interest of balanced play I've tweeked a realism mod so that the Thompson and the STG have just about the same killing power - its gotten great reviews and it's now fun to be on the Allied side. I kept the roll and yaw characteristics so the STG still has an advantage, but for those of us who actually put the crosshairs on the target and use it in short bursts (the way it's suppose to be used) the Thompson now gets the job done nicely. What I can't seem to do is change the values of the shot gun and the rockets. I've tried removing the tik file from the pk3, and I've tried setting the tik file ammo value to zero and neither has worked.
a) How do you modify the realism mod to eliminate the shotgun and/or the
rockets?

3) It's possible that I've already done the correct thing to get rid of the shotgun and rockets and the problem is with the procedure I use fo
making changes to the pk3 file. Please let me know if the following steps are correct, or if I'm missing anyting. First, I change the extension of the pk3 to a zip, then I unzip the pk3 that consists of a folder that contains another folder called model that contains another folder called weapons. Changes to the mod are made to the tik files in the weapons folder. Once the changes are complete I close the folders, then I rezip the model folder that contains the weapons folder, then I change the name of the folder, and change the extension from zip back to pk3 -- shut down the server, delete the old file, transfer the new file over. Note: I'm using the onboard zip software that comes with XP, and I edit the tik files use the notepad.
a) Is this the correct procedure?

4) Someone mentioned a patch or file that is placed on the users drive and in the main folder of MOHAA that would permit the game to run without the CD being in.
a) Where can I download this?

5) I've seen servers that have Admin text messages that appear during spectate mode. I'm not talking about the messages that you insert using AutoKick, these are messages that appear to exist on the server side.
a) What sever side files contain these messages, and how do you change them?

-------

Well, I only have about another 1,432,729 questions but this will do for now. Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx,
SCAF 6e

1. I don't know about any books, but you can get a decent list of cvars at the Commander Keen page (just use a search engine and you'll find it - I don't remember the exact addy). You can also check Bull's ongoing thread for lots of info. To mix map types, download the mixmaps mod from this web site - check the readme for the list of maps it works with. The g_motd is supposed to be the message of the day on the server, but it doesn't work.

2. The easiest way to mod out the shotgun and rocket is to set their starting ammo to 0 in the tik file (since no other weapons use their ammo, players can't get around this by picking up ammo in the game from other weapons). If you don't want to leave new players who pick these weapons with useless primary weapons, you can make a copy of any other weapon's tik file and rename the tik to have the same name as the rocket and / or shotgun tik. When players choose a rocket or shotgun, they will spawn with the weapon you replaced the original tik with. If you're changes aren't working, you may have another mod on your server that is overriding your changes.

3. The procedure seems correct - make sure you are using a new file name that will take precedence over pak6.pk3.

4. If you mean a client side hack, that's illegal. The 1.11 patch comes with a stand alone server executable.

5. Are you referring to the text in the center of the screen (ie the message of the day)? To do that, you will need to create a main\global directory and copy the localization.txt file (from pak6.pk3, I think) into it. Then make your changes to the "Press Enter to join the battle" line in the localization.txt file and they should start showing up in game.

Thanx for your help CrowKing, and for the speedy reply. And great job on Auto-Kick. It really makes a difference at both ends of the equation -- as an Admin I know I have some control over my server, and for the player (at least the trouble makers) they know that if they don't play straight maybe one day they'll run out of servers to play on.
