Police say a former U.S. Marine fought off five robbers with a pocket knife as he walked home from a waiter's job in Midtown Atlanta, killing one person and injuring another.
The man was attacked about 11 p.m. Monday on Penn Avenue as he walked home from Jocks and Jills restaurant where he waited tables.
The five suspects pulled up in a car and confronted the man.
Det. Danny Stephens says neighbors heard the man calling for help and called 911. He says one of the robbers had a pistol and another a shotgun.
The victim pulled the pocket knife from his backpack.
Police say two of the robbers jumped from the car. One of the robbers pointed a shotgun at him, and the man kicked it out of the suspect's hands.
Police say during the struggle he stabbed two of the robbers. A female died of her wounds; a second suspect is listed in critical condition.
Police arrested three other suspects.
Police say the victim will not be charged because he was acting in self-defense.
