If you have any games that freeze lately, check your RAM. I tried to fix everything possible that could go wrong with Windows XP Pro or my motherboard, but nothing worked. I took out a stick of (newly discovered) bad RAM, and nothing freezes any more.
If the stick you didn't take out still causes your system to freeze, try replacing it with the other one. If you have only one stick of RAM, buy some more from Crucial or something, and test it.
You can test RAM with SiSoft's Sandra with a burn test. If your system reboots with both sticks of RAM in, try taking out one. If it gets to run 25 or so, then you can be pretty sure that that piece of RAM is OK. If the system reboots before run 10, the RAM is bad. That fixed my problem with game freezes, so just sharing the information.
