First I'd like to address people griping about having bad FPS, which I would assume to be less than 30? Obviously more than that is recommended in a first person shooter.

Here are some tips to improve performance, assuming you have a computer worth the crap, like a 1 gigahertz or better.

1. A hard drive interface of at least ATA/100 should be recommended, especially if you only have 128mb ram. Keep your drive properly defragmented.
2. Get the latest detonator drivers from www.nvidia.com if you have a Geforce or TNT.
3. Kill of any background processes (duhh)
4. Dont use 32-bit color on the desktop or in the game.
5. Turn shadows off in the game. Who needs 'em and prolly take massive cpu.
6. If you have a 1st generation Geforce, dont attempt to run at 1280x1024 resolution. Use 1024x768.
7. Use a config with such things as:
r_fastsky 1
com_maxfps 200

Also some people may not realize that vertical sync on the nvidia drivers never seem to work in Quake type games, so you have to force it with r_displayRefresh. The default is 60, I use 85. The higher the setting the easier it is on your eyes. You can feel your eyes relax if usually run at 60hz. Most onscreen display's for monitors will show you what refresh rate your monitor is running in. (vertical frequency)

Do NOT adjust r_displayRefresh if you are not sure your monitor can handle it. OR you'll fry the thing.

Also, I've noticed this varible sometimes does not work when called from a config file. It wants a vid_restart once you get in the game(vid_restart is the command to restart the video subsystem of the game). If it doesnt work for you then put it on the commandline.

One thing I have noticed is that the console doesnt log chat messages. So if you miss something, you have no way to see the backlog. If you bind a key to "toggle ui_console", you have a way to enable and disable the console without having to goto the options screen. So tilde will show both the console OR the chatbox by using key bound to toggle it.

About the com_maxfps command, the default is 85, which will never exceed 90 shown on the FPS meter in the game(fps 1 in console). I changed this setting to 125, and it wouldnt show past 130. Changed it to 200, and sometimes achieved 200 frames per second in rooms and such.

Any comments or corrections would be cool.
