will it cause you to get a version mismatch with a server that is not running the same mod?

It's my understanding that since it's a server side mod there is no problems with conflicts.

You don't have to download it on to your puter.

So the person with the mod runs a server and then anyone who enters that game will use the mod regardless of whether they have dl'ed the mod or not... right?
