I keep getting this stupid problem " "Failed to set video mode - resetting to defaults "game will now restart with the new video settings"..... WThell is this.. I just want to play HL2.. Any ideas at all.. gerv or akuma gotta know this. cry:

Disable anything thats forcing a refresh rate on your monitor and then try running it.

Go into your stean folder and delete your HL2 preferences, then start up set them back to how you had them.

I can get it to the hl2 part, but after that there is no folder called "config" only a cfg folder and there is nothing in there like that. loney:

I probably meant \cfg\config.cfg but I can't be certain at work.


Look around there for stuff similar to that and I'll check again when I get home.

Like Akuma said my config is located in:
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\(steam username)\half-life 2\hl2\cfg\cofig.cfg


There is also a vidcfg.bin, not sure if thats it, but it is located in:
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\(steam username)\half-life 2\bin\


Have you tried just using the windows explorer search tool to look for the config.cfg?

i have no bin files... on .dll and no vidcfg files.. and in the cfg file the only file in that whole folder = vavle (rc file)....i just want to play hl 2.....
