Default Upscaling Dvd Player......... - 03-07-2007, 02:12 PM

Any one have one?

I'm considering picking one up up but not quite sure how well older dvd's actually look on a 40" screen when upscaled.

My lcd is 1080p capeable so there is no issue there.

Also, over half of my dvd collection is a result of rental, dvd shrink, and nero to burn. Has anyone watched a dvd post shrink on one of these?

Thanks gents.

I have a sony upscaling DVD player.

I would say, if you already have a decent DVD player, don't bother upgrading just for the upscaling factor. It's not worth it just for that.

If you need a new one anyway, go for it.

I bought one, and I can't really make much of a difference out. Maybe with a side by side comparison you could tell the diff. It's no where near HD quality obviously.

I'm not 100% sure but unless you get an HDDVD or BlueRay DVD I don't think it will upconvert to 1080p. The one I have will upconvert to 1080i via the HDMI cable if thats what you're refering too, however I gots no HDTV so I can't offer you help there

These guys are very informative:

This is what I am looking into.

Samsung Hi-Def Conversion DVD Player (DVD-HD860)

Upconverts regular DVDs to hi-def: With a regular DVD player, video playback is standard definition, not high definition. That's a problem if you have an HDTV because you can't watch movies in hi-def. This HD conversion DVD player solves that problem. It takes ordinary-definition DVDs and "upconverts" the video to high-definition quality (720p or 1080i), so you can take full advantage of your HDTV.

Description from Circuit City.

I am just curious about the quality of an upscaled dvd.

I have been looking around on that site Mr. Glass. Hell of alot of info there.

But mixed reviews on upscaling dvd players.

I know nothing about them, but clearly you cant take a regular DVD and turn it into HD quality, you can turn it into HD format, but I dont see that as any different than taking a 96kbs mp3 and re-ripping it at 320kbps... it is now technically 320kbs, but it will sound no different than the original 96kbs. I dont really understand the concept of it at all.
