Default AutoKick - can it slow you down? - 10-01-2002, 01:04 PM

I just recently switched to DSL because of ping issues and reliability issues with my ISP. However, I noticed that since I've started running a server I can have some good points and bad.

I keep getting the question from my tech support about me running AutoKick. Could AutoKick running on the same computer as MOH (client, not host) cause my ping to crumble? It seems that I'm the only one on my server that gets fluxuations in ping after map changes (although some people have some serious ping issues, but most have decent pings). And during the day while I'm monitoring AutoKick I notice my ping shoot up to 300 - 400 ms.

My ISP is Verizon (Western MA), but traceroute shows pings slowing down closer to the server than my ISP. Any ideas?

Theoretically it shouldn't slow you down. From my observations it's neither a resource hog nor a bandwidth hog. I have run into the annoying problem that it keeps minimizing my game when running it on the client.

Actually, I found the problem. In doing a tracert to my server during the time I occur the most issues. It seems that the problem is a router at Qwest, either in Chicago or Boston. I did a tracert with several other servers: aa.com and a few ping servers that xgameservers lists. It seems that I don't always bounce off Qwest - aa.com for example bounces off bbnplanet.

Does anyone know exactly how I could correct this? Is it my ISP, or the server? Who should I complain to?

Appreciate the help.

I'm not positive, but I believe this would have to do with your ISP. See if yoyu can get in touch with a support technician (and NOT a support representive) at Verizon, see if they can help you out.

As we all know, getting a hold of support tech's and not the over-stated operators, is like pulling teeth, eh Joe? LOL

Anyway, I remembered shortly after posting that Qwest was part of Verizon's network. Fortunately they have another company they route their clients through, so if I can change it over I'm going to. If not, I've still got cable running into the house - didn't realize DSL was going to be this aggrivating.

Yes, tell your ISP and ask if they can set a better route for you. They should be able to make the routing for your connection static (always the same hops!!). It's worth a try.
