Default System Tweaks?? What do you do?? - 10-04-2002, 01:05 PM

Was wondering what you guys do if anything about tweaking your PC, O/S, or internet connection.

I have WinXP as my O/S and did a few things to custmize and tweak it. Here are a few things i've done:

Removed all shortcuts from the desktop (Not needed when you have a taskbar and start menu)
Disabled windows default sounds (Not needed...i like it quiet)
Customized start menu for quick access to progs.
Cleaned start menu of stupid links and removed mutiple shortcuts (How many shortcuts do i need for Windows player??)
Only 4 progs running in "Start up" (I'll turn things on when i want them on)
Disabled Screen saver (Not needed)
Disabled Error reporting (Absolute dumbest thing from Microsoft....talk about privacy invasion)
Uninstalled Windows messenger (Who uses this anyway??.....really!!)
Disabled "Low diskspace notification (not needed)
Disabled WinXP firewall (How many firewalls does one need anyway)
Turned off "Zip Folders" (Couldn't get used to that look)
Set WinXP to classis look (WinXP looks too cartoonish for me)
Removed shared documents folder (Saves me the trouble to cut/paste files i want to share to that folder...i just name the folders i want to share on my network)
Disabled search assistant (Especially that retarted dog)
Installed a registry tweak for my cable connection
Update my drivers and also my Router BIOS
Purge .tmp .old .gid .bak files from my comp on a daily basis
Defrag when necessary

These are just a few things i did to speed up and customized my system. My system runs smooth and error free for the most part.
What do you guys do to your systems??

sounds like you do have a pretty efficient system if you do get rid of those .bak, .tmp, etc. files from your hard drive. Also I would recommend you get rid of unnecessary .jpg, .bmp, and .chk files as well. You would be suprised to see how much space unnecessary .jpg and .bmp files are on your hard drive. I got rid of many of those and it sped up my system a ton. Other than that I regularly defrag but that doesn't improve the performance much. I get rid of files in my temp folder too after it gets clogged up.

Aside from a few useful icons on my desktop, NOTHING extra loads up in
memory at start-up; not even volume control. My XP looks and feels just
like Win2K (98, even).

I installed Tweak UI and disabled a couple of things...

That about covers it biggrin:

uh... for you WinXP guys saying theres only like 4 things running at startup you might want to load up services and take a look there. i have always run barebones services and you cant get an internet connection without at least 6-8 running.

if you usually run from your administrator account you are also running a few services that are unneccessary from gaming etc. create a power user account for running games.

well apart from that the best performance tweaks are these....

+ set your swapfile as a static size min/max on a separate partition and if possible on separate partition on a separate drive

+ get analogX cache tweak program to change you system caches to what you use most

+ if your a gamer (what are the chances) you can set your games EXE file to run in realtime to that it has system resource priority over anything else.... can be done via task manager although you can also do it via a shortcut which ive forgotten

personally i just bumped my front side bus from 100 to 140 and got a 40% boost in my CPU speed.... beats the shit outta anything your gonna do with windows settings. also tweak your memory latency and gfx card clock/memory via coolbits.
