Default Experimental Submarine Fix - 10-30-2002, 02:03 PM

Hi,

Yesterday someone found funny to add a u-boat to the Algiers map on our server. Today I've been working on it and I have just finished an experimental fix for this.

Feel free to give it a try if you're suffering this plague, however I can make no warranties about it, since it could be called an alpha version, "brute force" solution (it doesn't increase the server load in any way, though). Should you have any feedback about, post on this thread.

If you're running Dogmeat Dogtag, you should install this version:
http://cealweb.net/modules.php?name=Dow ... tit&lid=14

If you're NOT running Dogtag, try this instead:
http://cealweb.net/modules.php?name=Dow ... tit&lid=15

As usual, extract the pk3 file and move it to your main folder.

Hope it helps...

Yep, I really don't like the way it works right now. I'm trying to find some way to really disable that menu. Your proposal is interesting, but I think it wouldn't work for reasons I can't state here (to many eyes looking ed: , lol)

Mmmmmmmmmmm... and one more thing. I'm starting to think I was wrong and it does indeed increase the load on the server connection, but really not too much, just a few bytes per second. I will post any updates here.

Regards

I am the owner and moderator for TheFiberPipe server. We have had lots of problems with the sub as well. I need to find out how it is being done so I can work on a fix for it. Can you help me? How well is you fix working?

I can't explain in depth how to reproduce this bug, of course, but it implies the use of a developer tool "left behind" by the mohaa developers (or, at least, behaving faulty). Basically my patch disables that menu once every 500 miliseconds. It can be bypassed, but should stop about 80% of the attacks at least. Probably more, since the most able scripters on the dark side are already trying to stop people from using this.

In order to disable the menu, the command is issued by the server to every client twice per second, but being a single command the bandwith involved shouldn't be a problem. However I'll try to make an exact measure of the bandwith used for a single client, and report on this thread.

Frankly, if I were you I would give it a try. I'm going to do so on my own server just as a preventive measure (try it for one day or so and check if your game is getting more laggy than usual - but really it shouldn't).

Good Luck!
