Default Illegal Name on MOHAA Server - 11-05-2002, 10:27 PM

Hey all, thought you guys might wanna give this some thoughts. Got an email from a unix admin who I think played on my server.

================================================== ===
IceVirus01

Today (5 Nov 02, about 2210) a player with the following name is playing on your server: IceVirus-TDM Server | Realism | Stock Maps | 4 private slots (64.124.119.18:12203)

waffen-ss-execute jews

This a hate name and under the law constitute a hate crime. When you get the chance please add his/her name to your player removal software. I will turn all this information over Secret Service (Handles Computer Crimes) and the FBI (for possible investigation of a Hate Group). Please be careful, as law is pretty plain. If you have knowledge of person or person(s) doing this type of activity you could held liability under Federal/States statutes. Also if you are running a server, it DOES NOT lessen your liability because you are not there. I would strongly advise you to check in every once in a while. Because I do like your server, I'm giving you warning in advance.

Any advice on this? Thanks for all the helps.

I'd ignore it. It's a game and people use idiotic handles all the time. Just look at the internet in general. Freedom of speech.

I would see if they mean anything by it. If so do something about it. There is no room in this small world for ppl like that. First it's something small like that next thing it's a 9-11. I am sorry my friends, there is no freedom of speech! Just court dates.

Absolute BS. The fact that you allow someone with a distasteful name play on your server is your choice. Mr. Richards is free to go to another server and it is not his right to dictate how yours is run/moderated.

[quote:3818b]removal software.[/quote:3818b]

This part of his statment implies that he only expects you to add his name to a 3rd party program such as "AutoKick". If you do not run such a program his demand cannot be met and therefore his threat is invalid. Thats nit picking his statment, but if you have no rcon experiance with banning its inpractical.

Leave the situation alone. If the name offends you or hinders game play by making others mad, then simply ask the person to change there name.

This is just rediculas.

It's not BS, All that written is true! Your story is BS, about wanting his name in a 3rd party software. It depends on what he wants to do. Like I said if there is anything meant by it do something. You all need to study the laws. Before you go on the internet and start having names like that. A Jewish Organization could easily go after that!

I don't want to turn this into a flame-bait discussion, but I have a viewpoint that I think should be heard.

I am a Civil War reenactor. I do both Union and Confederate. By what you are saying about "Hate Groups", does that place me in that category? Some southerners owned slaves, and I am reenacting that side. Does that mean that all Confederate reenactors should be locked up because it appears as a "hate crime"? No.

On that same note, should all WWI and WWII German reenactors be frowned upon because they choose to recreate that side of the war? Think about it.

There's a difference between carrying out a hate crime and having a dumb name.

I didn't mean let the guy use that name if you see it...i'd personally boot his ass no questions asked...I just meant that from a legal standpoint, nothing can be done.

I know this isn't reenacting, but this post implies the same thing. What I have been reading is that all potential hate groups should be locked up. In the minds of some sorry people, reenacting a time in history is as so-and-so's army is a hate group.

I'd boot the person, personally.

Not comparing a video game to reenacting, believe me...but the way some people are discussing this, it falls into the same category.

If a jewish organization was to go after that i would laugh my ass off. They would have to sue every single server admin the man has ever set foot into with that name. Then proceed to prosocute the user of the name. This would be the most assinine case ever put forth in the system to date.

There isnt jack shit this man can do to stop the other from using the name.
