Default Whatever Happened To U Boats? - 01-07-2003, 07:10 PM

For like the d-day landings. I dont know much about the naval war in ww2 but was the german u boat fleet destroyed or where they just not around when d-day started and the hundreds of allied ships could just putter around the water freely?

capt. bunny, check out this link:

http://www.uboat.net/fates/losses/index.html

it seems as though the german navy was beat down at that point. i know they used to use american liberator bombers and catalina's equipped with sonar as sub hunters. the bombers were loaded up with depth charges and the allies by this point had air superiority.

By the time 1944 and D-Day came around, the German Kriegsmarine U-boats had been all but eradicated as an effective naval force. Allied superiority in radar and use of depth charges assured that the U-boats were no threat.

Soposevly, there's a lockup containing 22 U-Boats in a harbor somewhere in Germany. I remember reading about this when we watched Das Boot in class one year. The teacher handed out a sheet of facts about the American/German fleet. That was one of them. I remember it was 22 U-boats, but I forgot where.

the channel is not very deep, U-boats operating there would either be not deep enough and get spotted by planes, or get run over by some of the bigger allied ships.
