someone told me that Quake style games have to be played with the keyboard and mouse and that trying to use a joystick won't really work.

Is this true?

I don't mind using the mouse and keys, but did not know if there were other options.

This is my first shooter experience really (other than the castle wolfentstein demo).

yes, forget about a joystick. Keyboard mouse is what most use.

First time I tried it was on the first FPS I bought (Dark Forces). Needless to say, I found the keyboard/mouse much more useful...

KB and mouse is the only way to play fps due to its accuracy. You will never be accurate with a js combo.

The only fps game I played using a js was Duke Nukem back in the day...but things had to change when Quake came out.

There is no comparison between the two.
