Real Audio
Writing: It was Berry who first brought in the song to the album sessions. He used the guitars he origanally practiced it on while Peter played bass and Mike played drums. They even recorded a demo with this lineup. "Micheal put these strong words and melody to it, and it turned out being one of the best songs," said Mike.
Recorded: April 1992
Recording: Peter's $20 drum machine, called a Univox Rhythmer, makes an appearance on the track. In the last verse, the harmony is carried on an organ instead of a piano. Patti Smith was scheduled to appear on the track, but was unavailable. Buck plays the guitar and Mills plays the organ and the piano.
Meaning: "That was written for teenagers basically, saying don't kill yourself. My sister knows someone who is 15, and tried to kill himself, and it led to this song. The idea was to write something that would appeal to someone who is in trouble." - Michael Stipe
Also: When performing the track in concert, Mills has been known to knock over his keyboard stool for dramatic effect...The video for the song, directed by Jake Scott, was shot on Interstate 10 in San Antonio. As the song reaches it's climax, the occupants of all the cars lining the freeway evacuate their cars and join REM into a march into the unknown...A few live versions of the song have made their way onto b-sides, most recently from Glastonbury '99 on 'The Great Beyond' single.
