In the paper I read it said he was a drugged up hippie that would follow the bears round shouting "I love you!", they found his remains a few days ago.

I remember that dude, he lived in Malibu and used to be a druggie. He did some interview on NBC a while ago and they reported that him and his girl got mauled by the bears he was watching, their deaths was even caught on tape. As much as I hate hippies and twig boys, I feel bad for him, no one should be eaten alive like that, and now 2 of the bears were shot by rangers. thats just proof enough that despite your good intentions with nature, its better to leave them alone cause they will kick your ass, just ask Roy Horn.

So he's been living with bears for 23 years without weapons, and they finally killed him. . .what took so long?

"In the past, Mr Treadwell's behaviour was criticised by Park Service officials and biologists, who expressed concern for his safety and the message he was sending out to others."
I guess his message now is, "Stay away from bears, or you'll get eaten."
BTW - I heard in one report that this was the first time he had taken his girlfriend with him. I wonder if it was her perfume that attracted the bears into the camp?
