Because youre judging from a different societal frame of reference than they are - the two can not compare which is WHY we have so many of these situations. . .foreigners going into other countries unprepared for the social contracts that exist in them.
What gives America the right to judge the way Iraq runs their country?[/quote:d0852]

They need to GTFO of Iraq. (Alive, if possible.)

Last I checked Shawn PM Allawi was calling the shots. If you have information to the contrary please -

Thankfully - neither is YOUR country.

[quote="TGB!":a39be]Its THEIR country. THEIR laws. This is why you make sure you know whats on you at ALL times. If shes innocent then its fucked up - but you cant piss on that countries shoes because they have a law stricter than yours. And its Indonesia folks - not freaking Canada.[/quote:a39be]

Don't you think it's kind of silly though? I mean, a crime like that, it could be pretty easy to be framed/innocent and end up being killed for such a petty, victimless crime.....Frightening if you're a foreigner.

I mean, that could have been planted by someone in the airport.....If you wanted to murder someone, shit, just give 'em a kilo of marijuana and a ticket to Indonesia, the government there will take care of it.

...It's a bit extreme to have a death penalty for that....Life in prison is bad enough to deter criminals.

I also love the fact that America thinks france is gay and has to fight their battles for them, but never thank them for helping during their independance. They were the biggest supporter to america.

I think its extreme ONLY because I come from this country. But we allow women to achieve incredible stature in this country - something someone from the middle east might look at and say "what the fuck is going on here" -

Yes it sucks that this person - if this story is true - may well be executed, and this persons home country has nothing they can do beyond diplomatic intervention.

I guess the US forget the part where it was supposed to get Saddams signature to allow them to go to war and overthrow his government. Silly us. Next time well give you a call to make sure we're doing things the right way.

stupid: ...

you keep saying that we should not compare our values or laws to theirs (Indonesia) due to societal differences, but then willingly admit/support the overthorwing of a country (Iraq) with societal differences from your own... please explain how it's ok for certain countries to be different, but not others...

Last time I checked Indonesia hadn't recently invaded a neighboring country and put themselves under the world's scrutiny. I really wish that the US would have ousted Saddamn during the first Persian Gulf war. I didn't hear anyone complaining when the US liberated Kuwait and protected Saudia Arabia.

And I take issue with people saying the US overthrew the the country. The US overthrew the old regime, but we want nothing to do with running their country. Most Americans, including this one want us out of there as soon as possible. That being said, leaving now helps no one.

How is removing a regime thats retarding world peace a societal difference of opinion? If Indonesias actions were threatening the world at large then yes it would be time to evaluate this action in the same light. Its not.
