Default So who's upgrading for doom 3? - 08-08-2002, 08:50 AM

Getting to be a bit of a joke this upgrading routine everytime a new game with a newish engine comes out.

Anyhow the game looks nothing short of amazing, john carmack was quoted as saying the game basically looks as good as resident evil on the gamecube but its a first person game.

Theyve also slowed the pace of the game way down so you don't go traipsing through the game inside of a day. Theyve even made realistic looking weapons models and for the first time EVER in a doom game you reload weapons instead of firing nonstop till you have no ammo left to use. Some of the animations look very nice especially the shotgun reload sequence.

Anyhow, specs at the minute are

1.33ghz tbird
radeon 8500
256mb ram
videologic sonic fury
40 gig quantum fireball

soon to be specs

pentium 4 2ghz
512mb ddr ram
radeon 9700
same sound card
an additional 40 gig hard disk.

Yeah, I will certainly be upgrading.

My specs right now are:

AMD XP 1600 (1.4Ghz)
MSI K7T266 Pro 2 Mobo
Geforce 2 Ti 64Mb
512 Mb DDR RAM
SoundBlaster 5.1
30 Gb Maxtor

Not soon to be, but gradually:

AMD XP 2200 (when its available in AUS)
ASUS A7V333 KT333 Mobo
512 Mb or 1024 Mb PC3200 DDR RAM
SoundBlaster Audigy
nVidia NV30 based card (when it comes out)
80 Gb Seagate Barracuda

This will set me back a bunch, but it will be worth it. Everything except the NV30 graphics card will cost me $1869 AUS, ontop of that, the NV30 will be some outrageous price...the things we do to make games look great....

I am just starting the upgrade process on mine. My old system sucks compared to some I see getting upgraded.

733 P3
256 pc100
Geforce 2 TI/pro 64
60 gig harddrive

I am going to upgrade in steps so I can keep a working machine that keeps getting better. I ordered my new box and power supply a couple of days ago. In a couple of weeks or so I will get get a motherboard and processor/fan. Then I can canbalize parts off two old machines and get the new up and running and then gradually upgrade the ram, and video, cdr/dvd, hd, etc as I go. I am trying to buy components that will allow me to upgrade as much as possible in the future.

I'll be upgrading for many games, not really for just Doom 3. I'm just really hoping for a Gf4 Ti4400 for my birthday. Then, if all goes well, my computer will be good for most anything, but I'm hoping so.

Right now
1.7 GhZ AMD Athlon XP 2100
64MB GeForce 2 MX400
512MB RAM
SoundBlaster Live! 5.1
Windows 98

Want it to be

1.7 GhZ AMD Athlon XP 2100
128 MB GeForce 4 Ti4400
512MB RAM
SoundBlaster Live! 5.1
Windows XP Home (That's coming in about half an hour. *prays Half-Life will still work)
