Default Need Computer Help - 01-25-2005, 11:41 PM

Okay, so...

I'm chillin' - playing CS:S and bam, computer shuts off. No sparks, no smoke, etc.

But, the thing won't turn on. Did my PS go out or what? Worth buying a new PS before I go take it somewhere to be repaired and get raped on it?

Could be any number of things, motherboard died cpu died, psu died. =/ Any led's on the mainboard lighting up at all? Usually when psu's go they leave a bit of a smell.

I get no lights or anything. Didn't have any sparks or smoke. No smell.

It was like someone pulled the plug on the thing.

just grab a 2nd computer, pull the ps out of it and try it

is the monitor off? perhaps you threw a breaker

some motherboards have little leds on them that show you they are getting power, see if your led is on

You can try jumping the ATX connector

take a paper clip from the green wire, to any black wire

if it doesn't turn on, the psu is obviously shot, iam not sure even if it does turn on if that will give you an good idea if it's shot or not, because it just might be something else

best bet is to pull another psu but that's just me....

ummm ram could be shot, if you have more than one stick pull one out and see if it cranks up

perhaps there is just a loose connection somewhere, make sure all the molex's are tight and ide cables arn't loose

also could be a heat issue, fried cpu / gpu

but that's on the bad side.....good luck

Okay, the smell was just from the compressed air I was using to make sure there was no dust.

I tried to jump the PSU (paperclip to green + black) and got absolutely no response whatsoever, so I'm going to try and swap out the PSU tomorrow.

Thanks for all the help everyone. beer:

sucks for sure I know that.
