Default Jobs - 11-14-2005, 07:46 AM

Ive been looking for a new job for the last month/ month and half. I've been looking for something computer maintenence/ network administration sort of job.

Most of these types of careers however require 1/2/3 years worth of experience working on networks/ computer diagnosis/Working with linux/win server 2003. But only require GCSE's at C level.

I however have some personal experience in home networking, and diagnosing and repairing friends PC's etc. But I have a BTEC national diploma in ICT.

How the fuck am I supposed to get a job, with no experience when all jobs require it? Or how am I supposed to get experience when all jobs require experienced people to join their team? I dont mind having to travel, as most of these types of jobs/careers are in manchester or liverpool (both about 20 miles away from me).

I've been looking at a different approach. What if I setup a home network (with a server running win server 2003/fileserver/ ftp server etc) and gain a form of experience this way? Would this class as a form of experience or would it just be a complete waste of time and money?

These job descriptions, for the most part, list the qualifications of their ideal candidates. I would apply or send your resume to any job that you think you may be remotely qualified for. If they choose to interview you, then it is up to you to give them reason to believe that what you lack in experience, you make for in other areas. We hire people all the time that don't have the qualifications that we advertise. Sometimes it comes down to; is this person a good fit with current employees, can this person get up to speed relatively quickly, stuff like that.

my buddy fixes computers for a local computer manufacturer. All he needed to be was A+ certified but he's both a+ and network+ certified. This summer i'm going to go for my a+ certification, because working at the grocerey store doesn't pay much.

College diplomas and university degrees are where it's at: these certifications are nice to have in the absence of the former but don't think they're an adequate replacement. Besides, neither really prepare you for the tedious bullshit you'll end up dealing with but I guess A+ is better than nothing if all you want is a summer job.

A + is a joke. I don't know that an A + certification will get you anywhere by itself. I took it only because my company paid for it.
