DDay is a mod for (believe it or not) Quake 2. It is like, the only active Quake 2 community left. Really, what makes it great is there is a community of no more than 200 people, and you get to know everyone, and make some good friends. Dday community really rocks.
Dday itself is pretty much just like DoD but less detailed. The thing that makes it really fun is the teamwork that surfaces every so often. And, playing against some fine people.

Day of Defeat definitely has some terrific maps and gameplay, but you never play the same people. IT is always different, something i like about dday is you get to know and enjoy matches against people. I also lost Half-Life a year ago and havent found it since . . . *sob*
I also wish they would fix the Mauser
