An excellent author on the two world wars is Paul Fussell. Keegan's best book is his first, The Face of Battle.
IHAVENOFRIENDS - You raised much ire because of the offensiveness of your remarks, particularly at a time such as this, when the Brits have once again proven themselves invaluable allies to the US.
Your attitude of American superiority is naive and shared by the nationalists of, for instance, Nazi Germany, or the Roman Empire, or the British Empire at its peak. Remember: any nation's role in history is ephemeral.
Ambrose is the so-called historian (now proven a plagarist) who wrote the book upon which Private Ryan was based; he all but ignores the role of the Brits, Canadians, Scots, and treats the invasion as if it were solely an American show. To say that the American's fed the Brits during the dark days of the war has truth, but a more accurate interpretation is that the Brits FOUGHT for us and we fed them.
