MOSCOW - Terrorists who were holding hundreds of hostages in a Moscow theater were being taken out of the building with their hands behind their backs, Interfax news agency said Saturday.

A Reuters photographer saw many hostages leaving the building and apparently dead people being carried out.

A dozen emergency vehicles rushed up to the front of the building along with an empty bus. A car packed with women and children was seen driving quickly away from the scene. Chechen Rebel leader Barayev and severel other hostage takers were killed. Most of the 40 or so guerrillas were killed, including their leader, Russian officials said. However, mass bloodshed among the hostages was avoided, they added, giving no death toll.


"The rebels had started killing the hostages. They killed two people and the hostages then started trying to escape," Sergei Ignatchenko, spokesman for the FSB domestic security service, told reporters at the scene, where about 40 Muslim rebels had held 700 or so theatergoers since Wednesday evening.
