I think western society grasps onto the holocaust because it's a lesson learnt that seems alot closer to home. I'm sure events like the rape of Nanking, etc, and other major atrocities against the Chinese are remembered to a point in Asia, although, it's hard to fathom another societies views, so I really don't know.
To me, the holocaust sums up all other world atrocities in a clear cut case, that doesn't mean that other genocides in the world should just be forgotten - I don't agree with special treatment of the memories of that particular atrocity over others, although It does seem alot closer to home for me.
