Murph, The belt is made of stamped sheet Metal and it is in link strips containing slots for 50 round each, belts can easly be linked together to make a belt however long you want it to be.

correct me if i am wrong, and i could be, but wasnt the early MG-34 belts made out of leather....? i thought i read that somewhere, but i know the MG-42 belts where made of a light metal...
well I have never heard that! Possibly on an MG.08 (maxim) or a MG13 or 15 but I doubt that too. so where did you hear that I'd like to send that person a nasty letter (he he)
