Fog...32bit vs 16bit, how to remove? -
12-07-2002, 11:31 PM
At least in the Spearhead maps, try using 16bit textures and color vs 32bit, on the Stadt level. 16bit is a grey wall at 40 yards, with 32bit you can see clear across the level. I was wondering why I was just getting owned by snipers on this level. It also makes a difference in Holland, where you can't see across the bridge very well, and back by the train yard, also shooting down the reservior. Makes a big difference in the snow village level as well.
I tried using 32bit, but I go a GF2 MX440 and a Athlon 900, it doesn't run very well at 32bit. Everytime I get in a close firefight it turns into a slide show. At 16bit it was fine, but I get clobbered at long range cause I can't see **** on certain levels.
So I need to turn off fog completely. Gewitter it should be on, that I admit (everyone is supposed to be blind in that one). I accidentally had the SP Berlin load with fog off once, so I know there is some way to do it.
Once I upgrade my machine and turn it up to 32bit, I won't need to keep fog off anymore.

I noticed this as well. Switch to 16bit and you get heavy grey fog. The deal with this is, by setting it to 16bit, your FPS goes up a bit. Maybe thats what the fog is there for?

I actually was acused of cheating a couple weeks ago (I was on a server obviously run by some teenage punks). Anyway, I'm playing as a German sniper on the Berlin TOW, sitting in the building that looks out on the radar station/88 and gives you a view of the bridge exit. Well, I'm whacking Allies like the idiots they were...running straight down the roads, no evasive moves, no crouching behind debris. I had about 24 kills and one death. Suddenly I get booted, rejoin and booted again, rejoin and then pick up discussion about the server admin arguing with another player. The admin goes off about me cheating because I have NO FOG (he followed me awhile to see how I killed so many). My view from that building gave me a field of fire just to the bridge where you can see faint tank obstructions (dragons teeth). Anyway, he yells about me cheating because I can 'SEE' to far and it's not fair. My machine modest by most standards now, P4 1.8, GeF3 64mb. But my setting are all on HIGHEST.
The point is.... some people are cry babies and have no skills and that comes out when someone plunks them in the head time after time because they're too stupid to use cover, look for snipers and counter them. You can't legislate individual computer settings....unless your Trent Lott or one of his cronies and then they'll legislate everything given a chance.....
Bottom line, you live or die by your machines capabilities. If you have to give up performance for playability, then expect to die a lot more... maybe try to change the way you play the game. Be smarter, don't 'hang' out a window sniping, stay back a couple feet, use sharper angles that don't expose your body as much, shoot and crouch to reload, move a step or two in another direction before standing up again, if a guy keeps plugging you from the same area, change weapons or approaches and get him back. Too many people don't try to counter each other if someone is in a dominant positon.
Now leaving my soapbox. Btw, I've never cheated, no interest in it as I think it is the lowest form of scum...why cheat, just proves the lack of self confidence in your privates anyway........... oohh.. ... that'll rake someone the wrong way.

Just try 16bit on Stadt for a few minutes. You will see what I mean. HUGE difference. It's not just about sniping. Running down the road you will get clobbered by people at the other end spraying away ay you, while you can't see them until you have run halfway down the road.
