Default Banning the Spectator Mode - 12-18-2002, 08:40 PM

Could it be possible to make a server side mod that doesnt allow ppl to go completely "free" spectator? Somewhat like there will immediately pop up the team selection window and it wont dissapear unless yuo join a team?

Or maybe some way of kicking spectators off the server?

why would you want to get rid of spectator mode? also what happens if someone leaves the computer for 30 seconds, they get kicked off the server?

Change the inactive spectate to something stupidly low like 10 seconds.
But i honestly dont know if that works i have never seen anyone kicked for spectating but there is a line for it in the CFG.

DaDs have it set at 900 but i dont think it includes map changes ie it resets so technically on our server you never get kicked for spectating.

try and see.

Its because people use the specate mode to find out where other players are... I use it myself, I just automatically hunt down people I just saw hiding somewhere in spectate sometimes, something you do subcontiously...
Or if like this damn sniper keeps nailing me i can get pissed enough to just use the spectator mode as some kind of cheat.
Anyway, it would suck to have to individually kick ppl that are free spectating so I wondered if anyone ever looked into the paks and stuff to find something like that out... I'm hoping it shouldn't bee too difficult to make something like that...

I think, rather than kicking, it would be better to use the same function as the game uses in objective mode in TDM mode. You can't spectate someone who isn't on your team. I wonder if it's possible to change that, though...

Unless, of course, you play in DM mode. Then I guess kicking is the best solution. To do that, just set the inactive kick to something lower than 5. That way, if you spectate for more than the number you set it as, you get kicked. Spectator kick or whatever just moves a player to spectator mode after however many seconds have passed without them moving, typing, or doing anything.

thanks, i knew all that about the inactive spectate stuff but I really want to do something about the free spectator in obj/rb and and tdm modes... you are right tho that in dm mode a low spectator kick would do the trick...

you guys think that stuff can be modified in the pk3 files? i hope its not in the source code or howd you call it...

i gues ill just have to try uh?

Spectator mode can also be used to monitor a player as well. So there is a useful way to use this when it is needed. For instance we had a player in a server for 3 games yesterday. In Brest he finished up 53/5 Suspicion started amoung us. In the next map he was going the same rate. 1st four kills of the game where his sniper rifle within 10 seconds all one shot. He was monitored for a few minutes due to his movements were quicker than normal across the map. SO Spectator does have it's usefullness if used correctly.
