...well, you hit the ball and both batsmen run from end to end as many times as possible before
fielders get the ball and hit the stumps. If they ran the length of the wicket 3 times, that's 3 runs.
The ball reaches the boundary = 4 runs
The ball goes out on the full = 6 runs
