Default Relatives that went to war - 01-09-2003, 10:48 AM

Again, this is probably a repeat of a thread that's been before, but i missed it, as i'm sure a lot did. This is to post stories, or even just acknowledgements of fathers, grandfathers, etc that went to war.

My Grandfather joined the Australian army in 1941 and served in the Pacific theatre with the 2/2 Pioneer btn. He got malaria a few times and his battalion actually got lost for two weeks once oOo:
Considering he was 16 at the time, it was a fair effort :P

anyone else got any?

My Great uncle was a B-17 tailgunner 8th Airforce, one day he was sick and could'nt go on a mission...he found out later that day that his plane was shot down and no one survived.

A 3rd cousin of mine was a P-38 pilot Based in England flew mainly ground attack missions and flew cover on D-Day. After his tour was over, he requested to be sent to the Pacific but just before his group was to fly some of the first jets against the Japs, we dropped the A-bomb.

Another of my Great uncles was a Navy SeaBee in the Pacific, doing road work, working on landing strips etc...

My Grandad was in the "ramcke" Brigade in the Fallschirmjager. He fought in the eastern and western fronts, but never got to go to Africa. He made 13 combat jumps.

I had a Great Grandfather in WWI. He was a member of the Australia Light Horse (cavalry) and saw service in Palastine and Gallipoli, he was bayonetted in the leg and after recovering and on leave he broke his leg in a football match in Palastine. He was then medically discharged. My Aunt's father fought as a German soldier in WWI on the Western Front.

WWI my Mother had two Uncle's who both fought in New Guinea as part of the Australian force that was assemlbed before the Middle East troops arrived. One of them was shot crossing a creek by a Japanese sniper three months before the war ended. They were on a mission of no military signifcance....ordered by the Americans who just wanted the Australian soldiers "out of the way".

Thanks Uncle Sam!!!

I'd only fight if the well-being and life was directly threatened by something, I wouldn't join the Military either I'd get a bunch of buddies and go viet-cong on their ass.

If Australia was directly threatened, like we were in 1942, by the Japs, then i would most certainly join up. However, i have no intention of Joining up for the express purpose of going over to Iraq, or North Korea, or Iran, or whoever else George Bush has a grudge against, just to make him feel better.
