Its far fetched. In real life Vasili put a glove on a stick, Koenig shot it and gave away his position. Vasili then sighted up that position and fired killing Koenig. He did not simply shoot a steel plate for the chance that "he might be there". Thats the most assanine sniper tactic i've ever heard suggested. "1 shot 1 kill, well, maybe if someones there." Comical thinking.
The movie was way off base.
