My Dad served on a hospital ship. My Dad's brother was in the engineering corp. He came in at D-day plus two. (I made the mistake as a kid of suggesting that building bridges must have been alot safer than being a foot soldier - he sat me down and told me stories of what it's like to build a pontoon bridge while guys are shooting at you and your buddies are dying). My Dad's sister's husband fought on Iwo Jima. He has never talked about it. My Aunt always said it was too painful for him to discuss it.

My grandfather served in the US Navy and was stationed in the Carribean Sea near the end of the war. He had to lie about his age to sign up. biggrin:

My Maternal Grandfather was a Marine Gunnery-Sergeant, (Artillery). Served in the PTO. Sadly, he passed away during my first week of Jump School. I had never been able to get him to tell me any of his stories. He would always shake his head and say, "Maybe later.".
I can remember my CO calling me into his office to give me the bad news. He was forthright and compassionate, but professional. At the time, I thought he was being an asshole. He told me I could have 3 days Leave to go home for the funeral. But if I did so, I'd have to drop out of Jump School, and not be able to re-attend. I chose to remain in my Class. I felt at the time, that it was what my G-Pa would've wanted for me. I still feel I made the right choice, although I do miss him dearly, and at times regret not being there with and for the rest of my family.
My Paternal Grandfather was a '4F'. During his younger years in Philly, he got himself into trouble, the kind that ends up with a severe beating from pipes and ax handles. His bones never healed properly.

My Dad's dad, was a Marine Pilot in the PTO. He flew a Helldiver and was shot down twice. Both times rescued in a little rubber raft in the Pacific and sent back to battle.
My Mom's dad was in the Army, but was shot in the knee during his training and was not sent over to Europe.
Most of my Great Uncles were in the war as well serving as pilots in the PTO.
