Default More MAP Questions - 08-15-2003, 10:30 AM

HI,

Beside checking on the map limit within MOHAA I would like to know about ubersound.scr and localization.txt

These two files are found in some map .pk3s.

1. If you have your own localization file why would a mapper put in a localization.txt within his .pk3 file ?? Is it needed for the mod because I've deleted them and the map ran fine.

2. There is a mod for zzz-ubersound etc that goes in your MOHAA main folder. Some mappers put a ubersound.scr inside their map. I've removed these and found no difference in game play.

Are those 2 files OK to remove from the .pk3 file? Just bothers me that there ar there and wonder if they inadvertenly affect or change my MOHAA configurations ???

I've moved this to MMS as you'll probably get a better response from there - I've left it here too for a bit tho.

the "ubersound" file is some part of the scripting of the map. After removing this, some of the....(how do I say this? oOo: ) scripted bushes would not have a given function. At least this is what I think the "ubersound" file do??

No, I would not remove a .scr file per-say but this is a scr file that is duplicated with the zzz-ubersound or z.pk3 which is exaxtly the same file (I've printed and checked them)

Default Confused ? - 08-15-2003, 03:23 PM

A custom map xxxxx.pk3 contains the elements of the map. I have seen that some CONSTANT files such as a script .scr which the system loads automatically with your configuration, are ALSO contained in a mappers .pk3 file. This to me would mean the mapper is trying to load an element that should already exist on my system. The must confusing being the localization file which changes the sayings you see when a player is killed. Like normally it might say 'xxxx stepped on his own grenade' and I have modified my localization to say in the same circumstance 'xxxx should not be allowed to play with explosives'. Adds some comedy to the battle.

That is why I question why a mapper would put a localization file within his .pke file. Does it change mine ? Not good. So thats why I'm asking the community to help me out here. Thanks for your viewing.

Some maps have localization text files included for their own custom messages. But, they won't work if you have local versions of the same file. Q3 engine reads pk3 files first and local files last (all local files); like entries in the last one read override the ones read before.

It was found a long time ago that there was a bug in the ubersound script in which some standard sound functions were missing. This made doing some types of custom sounds impossible. A patched version of ubersound was subsequently distributed as a pk3 file. A lot of people don't understand this and include ubersound as part of their map files.

Scriptors have also gotten a lot better and have found other ways to handle custom sound effects.
