Watch the film again.Willie and the SS soldier that killed Mellish are not 1 in the same.Willie couldn't kill a fly unless he was in a group of soldiers,Willie had no guts.After the SS soldier killed Mellish he walks right past Upham on the steps and Upham is shaking in his boots.
In the final closing scenes at the bridge when Upham is in the ditch and the german soldiers rush to the edge of the bridge he notices Willie and see Willie shoots Tom hanks character,then the p-51's start bombing destroying the Tiger tank,the German soldiers start running away in fear.Upham stands up and captures the group with willie with them and he shoots willie.
