Default call fo duty - 10-11-2003, 11:44 PM

hey guys. now there are 2 demos and i've played both. what i want to know is...why are the player and 3rd perosn weapon models so bad? i mean the textures are top-notch imo, but they look like dwarves, seriously. your opinion?

They must have agreed to go with that type of figure for some reason,
and as a result, I agree:

i'll probably buy it still, just for the combat, but only after price drop. i'm after max payne 2 now. it comes out in 4 days i believe. using havok physics and new bulet time features, that game looks quite cool. i expect the same type of gritty urban cop story as well.

I think it has too do with the close they wore not fitting right and they are always hunched over to concealed themselves better.

as for the models in 3rd person. Scorpio stated they use 3 models for every object, with varying degree of detail. For some reason they are probably using a low polly count for 3rd person, but why?

It could be for frame rate?

Yes, obviously when someones using a weapon a majority of the time you're gonna be seeing them from some kind of distance, the 3rd person weapons not gonna be 2 inches from your face at all really. So they basically just make a lower poly version of it , less polys = better frame rate. Mohaa is the only fps i know off, offhand that actually uses the first person perspective models in 3rd person as well. When someones firing a karbiner in mohaa if you watch them fire the bolt gets cycled and it actually moves as it would in first person perspective, unlike most games where all you get is the player model waving its hand about going through the motions. Nice detail though.

I never noticed that in MOH Gerard. Now I have to reinstall MOH and play around with that. biggrin:

Other then getting a better view of your surroundings, how does anyone play in 3rd Person, or do they?

Playing in 3rd person is more or less a hack as far as i know it lets you see around walls or something. Never tried it so i dunno =/

I think its just the clothes theyre wearing and that theyre hunched over for cover like rudedog said. They look fine to me, better than in moh.

moh is the only fps I know that doesnt use third person models. You're not really gonna notice other peoples guns much. Aslong as you can see what gun theyve got thats all that matters. You dont want every single detail like triggers on other peoples guns. SofII had 3 models for everything ingame, and 3 skins aswell.
DoD is another game I know uses them. The first person models are a lot more detailed than anything in moh, and if theres a different model for 3rd person, it means you can delete all hidden faces (eg in dod the whole of the right side of the kar98 is deleted), and you can make very detailed guns without going over the poly limit

The hands in moh dont always match up to the weapons in 3rd person though. If you watch someone reload the kar98 in spec, theyre hands just go anywhere, not even touching the bolt sometimes. moh does have different anims for first and 3rd person, but not models (except the mg42)

second demo was released on the PCG dec issue CD. Those of us who have a subscription have already received it. It should be at the news stands by next week.

<-- my avatar is from this second demo. Came upon these guys taking out a tiger before heading towards the mortars.

Check out TMT for more info on the 2nd demo
