The "super computer" used finds a new largest prime number relatively often. The only reason why this one made the news is because it happened to be on a graduate students computer, instead of some lonely 40 year old guy with no friends. To all you fools who said what's the point, like someone else said earlier, primes are used for encryption. Encryption uses the product of 2 very large primes and the larger they are, the more encrypted the data will be. Thus, large primes are very important and very expensive.
