terror alert system discussion -
01-13-2004, 03:27 PM
Everytime we get a terror alert in America, i turn it on the news and i see that the status is usually yellow (elevated, or green ). And when this happens airports, coast guard, etc around the nation are asked to be on a lookout or "high alert" for any "strange activity". What they really mean is if you see a foreign man with black hair and a dark tan carrying a something (anything) to tackle his ass and interogate him asap, am i right?
when and if the terror alert were to reach "severe" status, what are we as americans supposed to do? We don't have anything to do except to go on with our day as if nothing ever happened annoy: . Shouldn't the President or whoever try and come up with some emergency plan? ( escape tunnels, barracades, bomb shelters, etc)
you guys know where im going with this...

well, I don't think it means attacking everyone who looks arabic.
For example, if you see a Ryder van pull up to a Federal building and the driver unexplicably scurries off, that's a good sign to get the cops (or if you're MacGyver drive to the nearest cement-pouring truck and fill the bomb truck with a bomb dampenig casing biggrin: )
There is nothing we can really do if security fouls up. I am sure that passengers would resist hijackers more fiercly in the future knowing that they are going to ram into something, not be taken hostage.

Well, the terror alert has never been at green. Green is the lowest it gets. I don't think its gone below yellow, correct?
And the highest is if a threat is iminent. So it won't be at that level until 5 seconds before a plane hits another building. So you don't have to worry about it being at red, because once it gets there, the terrorist act will have taken place already.
Are you talking about a security plan for the entire United States?
What are they supposed to do? Build enormous underground bunkers, and then when the terror level goes up, schools shut down, businesses stop, wall street shuts down, and everyone runs inside the bunker? I doubt that would be good for the country.
There's nothing the government can do directly for every individual. You ahve to do it yourself. And thats where parinoia comes in. If your parinoid enough, build yourself a bomb shelter and live the rest of your life in fear. Sure it might save your life, but I'd rather not worry about it and die in an attack, than worry about it for the rest of my life and have nothing happen to me.
On a somewhat related matter, have you guys seen the movie "Arlington Road"? Good movie, and Strykers talk about delivery trucks reminded me of it. It deals more with domestic terrorism, but still is very valid today in my opinion.

Agreed. Chances of a high jacking now a days, arn't very likely. But, gtboy's is partly right. If you were to walk into an airport with turban, looking like a Muslim, I bet a couple people would change flights. People would be starring at you. Just not fair. rock:

yea, your're right. I just couldn't think of the level below yellow.

That would be one hell of a start though, don't ya think? Instead of civilians running for their lives when under attack, causing even more havoc and chaos, they could just as easily be headed to the nearest shelter w/ their family knowing and feeling alot safer than being outside.[/quote]

man the chances of a terrorist attack are more likely to come from a fellow american vs a forienger. but it there is ever atttack the only security you have is how far you are from it and an attack can happen to any country.
