999 ping almost always on 300kbps connection -
07-11-2004, 10:41 PM
Here is what happens: I join a server and seem to have a low ping at first, somewhere from 60-110, but after about 5 to 10 seconds, it's 300, then 400, 500, etc., until it finally ends up at 999 and refuses to come down. My friend has the same ISP (Communicomm) but just alittle faster, and his ping is static around 20-100, and has never experienced the problem I have. I just built a new PC, and it's done it on this one and the last. I called the ISP, and they don't seem to understand what is going on. Another thing, I have a router, I don't know if that could be the problem, because there are SOME occasions where my ping is static at 60 or so for hours at a time. Browsing speed is fast, however.

You need to match the type of internet connection with the game's type. So if you have sdsl service set the game option to xdsl.

also, if someone is eating up bandwith on your other computer, it will lag the hell out of you, so tell the person on the other computer to stop downloading porn while you play biggrin:

I set it to ISDN because it's close enough and made sure the other computer was turned off. When I refresh the game list, there are games with real low pings that I join, and as soon as I arrive it's 999. There is nothing else eating my bandwidth, and again, browsing the web is very quick, so I don't understand this problem. I don't know how much more of this I can take. wallbash:

ISDN is 128k xDSL is 300k. Do you see the difference. As I said if you have DSL service set it to xDSL.

It seems that it is my PC that is causing that problem. Yes, MOHAA is updated to the latest version. I plugged in my old PC and it plays just fine over the internet, so it seems I'll have to deal with the low fps if I want to play online. I guess my new PC needs to be configured. I'll just get the guy that set up the modem to come and check it out. Thanks for the help guys.

Are you using a dial-up connection?

when you connected with the old pc was that also on the wireless?
could be packet loss with the wireless, never heard any good things about playing games on wireless
or could be some spyware eating up your bandwidth
run spybot and\or adaware lately?
shit for that matter how about antivirus check???

Aye, wireless means bad gameplay. Something about firewall, and wireless internet is a nogo. I don't know why, it just is. You should get a direct connection to the internet.

I also have wireless internet. Its Freaking Awseoome!!!!! Low pings almost everywhere. Norton firewall is a program that stopped one of my friends from playing at one time. If you are on a router, make sure you have the correct ports open, or forewarded.
Its the satellite (directway) connections that are crappy for gameplay. Wireless works the exact same way as cable or dsl, just without the wires, lol.
