Depending on where you live, bike thievery may be more common than you'd imagine. In some cities they keep a literal warehouse full of recovered stolen bikes. You can file a police report and check with them periodically.

Short of that, I had a buddy who had some hook-up or custom pedals - one of the two or both - where he could just unsnap the pedals and take them right off the bike to toss into his backpack. Seems like a pretty good deterrent to me, since most bike thieves are dumb enough to ride the bike away.

removing the pedals is a good idea. my friend took the seat with her yet her bike still got swiped.
