I've played on 56K, and the note above was right on. Keep the group small, and you'll do better. You can have tons of fun. You just put up with the crashes, freezes and other glitches.

I tried to figure out which weapons worked best for us slow folks. I know I'll get slammed for this, but I always found rockets to be the best. They're sort of a poor man's sniper rifle -- a great equalizer.

The fast players can whiz around. Rocket folks can do the equivalent by popping up, launching a big momma and popping down again.

The fast guys can strafe and spray a huge range of bullets quickly. They can also throw grenades faster. We compensate by launching a missle that has a large frag radius (but not as large as a grenade.)

There are ins and outs. And you'll get heckled, as I did. Oddly, the ones who complained about my using a bazooka were the ones who had high-speed modems and wanted to keep the edge. Forget them. That's like telling a one-legged man he needs to fight without his crutch. (But if I found myself in an arena of dial-ups, I switched. )

Good luck.

I just wish there were an arena just for 56K. Heard of one?
