It is impossible to control so much land and defend it. We know what happened to Rome. They were so big the Huns walked right into Rome and destroyed them. Of course the,"I have more land I'm more powerful" view seemed to dissapear a bit. As long and you dont have to much land I think any empire can survive. Then again what makes an empire would be size.
