For the clueless kids here:
Doom 3 is how iD originally envisioned the first doom game to be, obviously back in 93 when the game was made the tech was extremely restricted both for hardware and software. This has been talked about numerous times in interviews with id.
I wouldn't really say that hl2 has better physics, just that hl2 was based on the gimmick of being able to toss shit around and the physics are far more obvious. Take away hl2's physics and theres nothing special about the game at all.
Resurrection of evil expansion exposes the physics in doom 3 more with the grabber gun. Which by the way isn't a ripoff of the gravity gun in hl2, the leaked doom 3 beta from e3 2002 has console commands that manipulate physics like the grabber so you can pull stuff towards you or blast it away from you. Since halflife 2 like doom 3 was also shown for the first time at e3-2002 it just seems like they were thinking along the same lines with physics manipulation. Both weapons though started off as game development tools so they could mess with the physics objects in the maps.
As for linear gameplay, duh its a fps game, the majority of them are linear, hl2 is linear as well in case you never noticed. oOo:

And resurrection of evil so far is pretty fun, the grabber makes such a difference to the gameplay biggrin:

Yup, just after slapping the first boss about as well. Havn't got the double boomstick yet. Grabber is really fun though, tossing chairs and stones at imps, exploding barrels or grabbing their fireball and lobbing it back at em. 1 button interface for the grabber, hold in left mouse to grab something and release the button to fling it. Get a nice little cutscene showing the grabber in action just before you get it as well.
It also seems to warp your view a bit, where the barrel of the gun is when you use it the screen kinda distorts, nice looking effect. You can hold objects for like 4 seconds, not unlimited like the hl2 grav gun. Its weird how different it makes you play the game, first level or 2 you seem to be pretty low on ammo mosta the time so you tend to stay back and try to start tossing shit at the enemies. Its really handy for grabbing health packs that are just out of range or in some dark corner you dont want to go into.
So far ive yet to see any closets with zombies coming behind you, which is a plus, only zombies ive seen so far are the marines. Hell time is really fun, 3 vulgers spawned i activated it and started dancing around them plugging them with the shotgun. Lasts like 15 secs or so. biggrin:

Linear as in there was only one real direction you could go, its not as if you could take off and explore and end up finding alternate routes to ending a level, you were restricted to a path like most fps games.
Only fps i have in mind that doesn't seem linear and allows a lot of exploring is stalker.

i see what you mean now. i was looking too far into the term and was comparing dooms' repetition of the same generic hallway vs. all the various levels of hl2

I wouldn't say doom was a repitition of one hallway, doesn't make sense that something like that would look radically different in each location. Doom was restricted in that sense to similar areas so it would convey a base on mars, and for that reason people seem to think the engine can't do outdoor areas oOo:

You obviously never went outside the Mars faculty, there being no air outside (though you do for around 15 seconds..and its beautiful), but I truthfully didnt find the enviorments "generic". Sure, all the walls were made of steel, but every level, from Alpha Labs to the Chemical Waste Sector, to Delta Labs, had its own little twist on it. Delta Labs was even more futuristic than everything else was, with high tech hologram thinks everywhere, and science lobs just dotting every room. Alpha Labs was like an expirimental place..there was booming and hissing machinery everywhere, and giant lazer guns on test runs, shooting these gorgeous blue beams out. Then there were the foribidden places, where no one went to, with rust covering everything, dust falling from the cielings, and in the waste plant, green mist hanging in the air. Of course, all the walls were still metal, though in one point you go through a cubicle, but thats nothing to brag about.

Your hands start to go that way anytime you're using the artifact, they start off normal then quickly go that way. That kinda bend at the front of the grabber is part of the distortion effect you get when using it.

Preorded it through my cable modem biggrin:
I'll be buying it when it comes out here anyway, got doom 3 and this adds a lot to it, no harm in trying before buying imo. Some walmarts and target stores over there are meant to be selling it early, officially comes out monday but some of them have been selling it since thursday\friday.
