They knew that sooner or later, their would liekly be a war between the US and Japan, and they decided to launch a surprise attack, and start the war on their terms. how can say there was no way to avoid a war with the US, the US wasnt interested in going to war with japan or germany, it wasnt until pearl harbor that the US really got invovled in the war . they deserved what they got , if you look at the major ground battles in the pacific, the US command knew the japs wouldnt just give up , so they had no other option but to drop the bombs.
