ehhh, they will sound better (louder/clearer) off an amp, but it is definitely not necessary. I'd see how you like it without them being amped first, no reason to spend tons of money if you like it fine without. 90% of people with so called "systems" are JUST subs and an amp for the subs.. so most people dont mind. All a personal thing, for me, I cant stand having rear speakers period. I just have front components and a sub all amped, gets louder than you can stand while retaining full clarity.
