"*Girl Name* can you tell me what the difference is between Gatsby's conversation with Nick Carroway in the novel and in this movie?" -Teacher
"Umm hold up..." - Girl
"Ones in text the others in video?*Giggle like a fucking retard.*" - Girl
"Not the answer I'm looking for..." - Teacher
"Oh JK!" - Girl (they literally say "JK" because pronouncing three syllables is more then their upper middle class minds can handle.)

[quote:59ffa]Backpacker is based on a fashion style popular in the mid to late 90s where people involved in hip-hop wore large backpacks. Originated by graf (graffiti) writers who kept all their cans and nozzles in the packs, the style caught on quick with the suburbanites and alternative rock kids who didn't want to stray too far from their style but still wanted to have a hip-hop edge.

People also use it now as a derogatory term for nerd-rappers, hippy-hoppers, and other fringe hip-hop followers, referencing the fact most of the listeners are suburbanites buying or co-opting into a certain style.[/quote:59ffa]

Generally most of the rap that the backpacker listens to tends to be the less aggresive and violent hiphop. Much more accessible to a larger demographic of listeners, but doesn't get any commercial airplay on mass tv or radio so no massive commercial success is possible for these groups. They generally wallow in the fact that they're doing it for the love of it.

Typical acts:

Aesop Rock
Mr Lif
MF Doom
Atmosphere
People Under The Stairs
Ugly Duckling
Athletic Mic League
Cali Agents
Blackalicious
Crown City Rockers
De La Soul
Souls Of Mischief
Hieroglyphics
Dilated Peoples
Lone Catalysts
Digable Planets
Little Brother
Jurassic 5
The Roots
...etc etc etc

...Same hiphop format, different lyrics and beats.

Hell, most young people haven't heard of these acts. Unless you go looking for this type of hiphop you'll rarely find it on your own, old or not. biggrin:

It's because the old jews in charge of the recod labels are too scared to take a chance with alternative rap and just play 50 cent and Eminem over and over on the radio because it makes them shitloads of money. Kids eat it up. Hell, even mainstream rock is in better shape than mainstream rap. At least with mainstream rock you get more than one sub-genre that gets onto the charts. Hiphop you only get jiggy pop rap. You don't even get true gangsta rap anymore.

It's sad.... cry:

but i'm gay and joyful.... happy:
