I dont trust myself building a computer on my own (heavy handed). My dad said he would pay for it, and write it off as a company expense, as long as I work for 6 months for him.

I will be mapping, and gaming (ofcourse) with the computer. Mapping takes a hell of a lot of processing power, and a lot of memory.

my choices for processors is between the AMD 3800, and 4200. Would going up to the 4200 be that much of a performance boost? Or would I be better off sticking with the 3800?

When it comes to graphics cards, 7800GTX or X1900?

I have basically everything else covered. just need to know about the processor, and graphics card.

The x1900 gives the 7800gtx a good kick in the balls, plus its a good bit cheaper than nvidia's retarded 512mb panic edition they tossed out in tiny quantities at a totally stupid price. And that price has got higher over the months, it now sells in the uk for £581.57($1,013.54), a few days ago it was selling for £640 ($1,115.44). oOo: Think the stores finally figured out they weren't gonna shift any at £640. stupid:

As for the cpu, not a ton of difference between the 3800 and the 4200 (200 mhz per core). The 3800 is regarded by most as the "budget" dual core of the amd line since its the cheapest. Personally id go for the 4400+ for the extra cache on it.

Yup, both times i had the motherboard on top of its box on some foam, connected cpu,gfx,ram,hd and the power connector. Soon as i powered on a diode on the board beside the memory slots turrned pure white then started to burn. oOo:

Must have a few faulty components in a batch of them or somehing, made up my mind to go the shuttle pc route a while ago, can't be bothered building another full size tower up again.

basically i am finally getting away from my laptop after a 4 year gap away from my ancient built P3 voodoo3 and want to build a new rig. Totally lost for what specific gpu/motherboard/cpu versions etc too look at, no problems with putting it together just need pointing to which are best too get.

looking at getting a x850xt 256mb, 1 gig of ram and a athlon 64 3200+ then whatever else and a decent motherboard if anyone could give any suggestions.
