Why surely Cyberdoc.

Here is what I do:

1) Update XP: Go to windows update (start->windows update) and get the most recent patches. Don't get the crap you don't need but make sure you get the security fixes.

2) Optimize swap file: The most effective use of the swap file is on a separate drive. I have my OS on one drive and the swap file on a 1 gig partition on another drive. Do a google search for "XP swap file" or "XP pagefile" and you will find some good reading.

3) Delete the crap: Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs and select add/remove windows components. Get rid of the stuff you don't need/use like MS Paint, extra destkop themes, MSN, extra mouse pointers etc.

4) Use Xpantispy: I forget the URL but google for xpantispy. It's a small program that will disable many of the "spyware" type aspects of XP. It will even uninstall microsoft messenger if you dont use it. (I don't know what the bottom section of xpantispy is for so I leave those as is).

5) Get hold of a good utilities program like System Mechanic (http://www.iolo.com) or Norton System Works: They will help you with windows problems and keep your registry clean.

6) Defragment often (once a week or so)

7) Keep up to date on drivers (audio, video, Via 4-1s)

8) Get a good antivirus program.

9) I assume you are on a cable/dsl modem. Get zone alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com)

10) Check out your startup folder and disable anything that starts up with windows that you don't need. (Nero, winamp, clonecd, real all have startup options that you can disable). BTW - never install REAL - it's just not worth it for all the junk.

That's about all I can think of right now.

Settings I like: Classic start menu, classic control panel, in folder views I like Detail views.

To be completly honest, if you have WinXP Pro and not home, you can download a shareware version of a proggie called "Tweak-XP" here:

http://www.totalidea.de/frameset-tweakxp.htm

It does about 80& of the things that Nomar just listed, along with other goodies to run it at top performance. I HIGHLY recommend it.

I've used it before Joe and there was a reason why I stopped - don't remember what it is.

You and I are competing for post whore of the day today I think!
