Default mp3 Player Advice - 08-20-2007, 09:17 AM

So, I'm looking to buy an mp3 player for the wife's birthday (under $200-$250). She doesn't need video playback and 8GB is PLENTY of space for her.

Seeing as though i haven't done any research on mp3 players since I bought my 6GB Nomad Jukebox in 2001, I figured I'd come here to get the lowdown.

I'm looking for pros/cons for the following players that are available at the local Best Buys/Future Shops in Ottawa:

Option #1: iPod Nano 4GB
Price: $214.99

Option #2: Creative Zen V Plus 8GB
Price: $149.99 (after $50 instant rebate)

Option #3: Creative Zen V Plus 4GB
Price: $129.99

Option #4: SanDisk Sansa 8GB
Price: $169.99 ($60 instant rebate)

Option #5: Samsung 4GB (YP-T9JAB)
Price: $114.99 ($95.00 instant rebate)

I have a sansa and its pretty easy to use and works more than enough for me. I have a 2gb model with a 1 GB expansion card and I can carry along 500+ songs

Same.

I've mentioned before how my Creative Zen Vision:M is probably the best thing I've ever bought. Looks great, sounds great, simple software that works perfectly, good support if things go wrong.

I can't fault my Zen dance:

But for what your wife would need, I would probably go for the Sansa. They're really nice and simple. She doesn't need any of the extra crap I'm presuming so just go simple.

I have the 1st gen Nano 4gb. It does the job and I have 1002 songs on it. Maxed out.

How much music does she listen to? You could go for the 2nd Gen 2gb Nano for less $.

She basically wants it for exercising/walking, so it's not like it's for hours of music at a time and she doesn't have much need for video.

Sandisk 8GB. Its a fucking great player especially for the price. Its the same price as a 4GB nano. Trust me Zone i sold MP3 players for 9 months. Sandisk shit is quality and the price is great. 199.99 for 8GBs? Thats awesome. We had a sale on the for 149.99 the other day. Thats 2 GB nano price right there.

And get the DLO Neoprene armband case. Its like 32 dollars but its good shit. Sweat proof and what not.

I was hoping you'd chime in, Milla. Thanks for the advice. I'm going to check out some players tonight.

Even though it got zero votes, I bought the Samsung 4GB (YP-T9JAB). I looked at all the players in the store and a few things struck me:

1. The SanDisk looked good, but I wasn't digging the interface on the front. They had three units there and all three were different in terms of the little wheel on the front. One was smooth, one felt really clunky and one felt like it was stuck. Just seemed chincy to me.

2. The Creative players looked good, but again I wasn't happy with the interface on the actual unit.

3. The Samsung was an insane-o deal. $95 off is hard to pass up for a player that does all the things it does. I guess the proof will be when the wife actually uses it.

Thanks for the input, all.
