Ok, now it's time to spoil your fun. evil:
Those are actually NVBs (Night Vision Binoculars). The reason the caps are on is because they have a very tiny pinhole in them that revents about 98% of light going into the lens. With these caps on, you can see what Night Vision looks like, even at daytime.

The patch is wrong on his jacket, from what i know in the marines at least the stars of the flag are always over to the right to give the impression of the flag being carried forward, there its like its retreating.
