easy way around the gradient look in what he did... make the box white or whatever color, take the eraser brush to a huge fuzzy circle, set the opacity of eraser low then just erase it at the end until it looks good

How to to add gradient to your "bars":

First, make a rectangle with the rectangular marquee tool. Then, fill it in with what ever color you want. Change the opacity of the bar if you want.
Now goto add layer style/gradient overlay. Change angle to 0 degrees. Press ok. You've got a bar with gradient.
